According to a review by Roger Ebert, the movie “Jerry Maguire” starts out looking cynical but quickly becomes heartwarming. The story follows Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who is fired after writing a memo about agents needing to care more about their clients. The only person who stands by him is Dorothy, an accountant he met once at the airport. As Jerry helps a football player named Rod learn to play from the heart, he also falls in love with Dorothy. Ebert notes that the film is a delight, especially when Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger are on screen together. While the sports scenes are predictable, Cuba Gooding Jr. delivers a strong performance in a different role. Overall, the movie is about transformation and learning to value something more important than money. Ebert suggests that the film could have been improved by focusing on fewer subplots.

New calculated rating: 4.5 stars.
