VW will start testing self-driving cars in the US this month

by TM

Volkswagen is bringing its first fleet of autonomous test vehicles to the US, beginning in Austin this month. The fleet consists of 10 modified ID.Buzz electric vans using Mobileye’s Level 4 self-driving system to collect driving data for validation and refinement. The German automaker plans to expand the fleet in Austin and test in at least four more US cities. If successful, VW aims to launch a commercial self-driving service in Austin by 2026 and offer driverless EVs to other mobility companies. The move reflects VW’s transformation into a mobility company adapting to the rise of ridesharing and robotaxis.
