Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator Yuji Naka receives suspended prison sentence for insider trading

by TM

Yuji Naka will not be imprisoned for insider trading, as a Tokyo judge has handed him a suspended 2.5-year sentence and imposed fines of $1.1 million and $14,000. Naka, the co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, pleaded guilty to violating Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act by purchasing shares in game studios before their partnerships were made public. He made around $150,000 in profit from the sale of these shares. Two other former employees were also arrested for similar offenses. Insider trading is uncommon in the gaming industry, and while this may not directly impact the Sonic franchise, it does harm Naka’s reputation.
