Right-to-Left Layout Support For React Native Apps · React Native

by TM

React Native has been updated to support Right-to-Left (RTL) layout for apps in order to reach a larger international audience. Changes have been made to the core layout engine used by React Native, as well as specific components, to support RTL. The update allows for the flipping of component layouts and the automatic RTL layout of gestures and animations. To make an app RTL-ready, RTL language bundles should be added and the appropriate function should be called in native code. Components with icons or images should be flipped according to the layout style. While gestures and animations are not supported by React Native core code, some components, such as SwipeableRow, already support RTL. The I18nManager can be used to test RTL layout without changing the test device language. However, there are limitations to RTL support, such as varying text alignment behaviors in Android and iOS. The future plan is to make gestures and animations RTL support more developer friendly. The article concludes with an invitation to check out the RTLExample in the RNTester.
