React Native Core Contributor Summit 2022 · React Native

by TM

The Core Contributor Summit 2022 brought together active core contributors of React Native, library maintainers, and Meta’s React Native and Metro teams. The event, hosted by Callstack in Poland, included workshops on topics such as React Native Codegen & TypeScript Support, React Native New Architecture Library Migration, React Native Monorepo, Metro Web and Ecosystem Alignment, and Metro Simplified Release Workflow.

In the session on React Native Codegen & TypeScript Support, contributors worked on supporting new types that were previously unsupported, such as string union types in TypeScript. They also improved auto-linking for iOS, which was missing a use case in scenarios where libraries and the app were in a monorepo. The collaboration led to the completion of 47 tasks and further improvements to the codebase.

The session on React Native New Architecture Library Migration focused on supporting library maintainers in migrating to the New Architecture. Contributors asked questions and provided feedback on the New Architecture, and the migration process for several libraries was initiated.

The React Native Monorepo session aimed to refactor the react-native repository and implement the Monorepo RFC. Contributors brainstormed and collected opinions, expanded the Continuous Integration infrastructure, and started renaming and adding scopes to packages.

For Metro Web and Ecosystem Alignment, discussions were held on adopting the “exports” specification for multiple entry points and improving Metro’s feature set for web use cases and the bundler ecosystem. The session resulted in RFCs for Metro and Node.js.

The Metro Simplified Release Workflow session addressed the challenges of releasing React Native, the React Native CLI, and Metro in a synchronized manner. Dependencies between the packages were reconsidered, and plans were made to improve the coordination and reduce duplication of functionalities.

Overall, the Core Contributor Summit 2022 was a successful event with knowledge-sharing and collaboration among contributors, resulting in progress in various areas of React Native development.
