Hitting the Books: Amazon’s unique ‘threat’ to digital commerce

When it comes to online merchandizing, nobody is bigger than Amazon. In 2016, Amazon and Walmart engaged in a fierce battle for market dominance, utilizing both above-board strategies and underhanded tricks. Journalist Jason Del Rey recounts this battle in his book “Winner Sells All.” The rise of Amazon and other tech giants led to increased scrutiny in antitrust circles, with critics arguing that Amazon’s monopoly ambitions far outweigh Walmart’s. Amazon’s control over infrastructure, retail platforms, logistics, and smart home devices enables it to favor its own goods and services and gather intelligence for its advantage. As pressure from Washington DC increased, Amazon leaders became defensive and questioned why Walmart wasn’t facing the same level of scrutiny. It was later revealed that Walmart indirectly funded a nonprofit group called Free and Fair Markets, which attacked Amazon in the media. The Wall Street Journal exposed this funding, prompting Walmart to deny direct involvement while expressing shared concerns with the group.
