Earth’s core is wilder than you can imagine

by TM

Around 1,800 miles beneath our feet lies the Earth’s core, a giant ball of blazing-hot metal that has a profound impact on our lives. Although we cannot directly observe the core, scientists have learned a lot about it. The core is primarily made of solid iron and reaches temperatures of around 9,800 degrees Fahrenheit. It remains hot due to remnant heat from Earth’s formation and the insulation provided by the thick mantle above it. The core’s heat generates Earth’s magnetic field, which protects us from harmful solar radiation. However, there are still mysteries surrounding the core, such as what drove the magnetic field before 3 billion years ago. Despite the changes in the core’s behavior, it will not stop spinning.
