Announcing React Native 0.64 with Hermes on iOS · React Native

by TM

Today, React Native released version 0.64, which includes support for Hermes on iOS. Hermes is a JavaScript engine optimized for running React Native that improves performance by reducing memory usage, download size, and the time it takes for the app to become interactive. With this release, developers can now use Hermes to build on iOS by enabling it in the Podfile. However, it is important to note that Hermes support on iOS is in the early stages, and further benchmarking is being conducted. The release also includes the enabling of Inline Requires by default, a Metro configuration option that improves startup time by delaying the execution of JavaScript modules. Additionally, Hermes now supports proxies, allowing compatibility with projects such as react-native-firebase and mobx. React 17 does not introduce major changes, but it does include a new JSX transform that eliminates the need to import React for JSX usage. The release also includes several major dependency version changes, such as dropping support for older Android API levels and requiring Xcode 12 and CocoaPods 1.10. Overall, React Native 0.64 brings significant improvements and new features for iOS development.
